What are Joint Logistics Hubs/Nodes??

If you have been following the news in recent days, you have surely heard of JOINT LOGISTICS HUBS or JOINT LOGISTICS NODES (JLN). Latest news also reveals that General Bipin Rawat, Chief of Defence Staff, is conducting an operation at the JLN base in Mumbai.

However, many are unaware that they are also serving. So today we will look at the properties of these nodes/hubs.

Why integrated logistics centres/hubs?

As we all know, India has 3 military services: Air Force, Navy and Army. Until recently, all these services had separate facilities and warehouses. From logistics to maintenance, everything was handled separately at different workstations.

The government has therefore developed the concept of common logistics centres/ hubs. This solution would address a long-standing problem of lack of coordination and synergy among the nation’s three services.

In addition, such a solution would reduce costs for government agencies by creating shared workstations rather than individual workstations, as was the case in the past. This means that logistics costs are also reduced. It also offers the possibility of making better use of existing logistics.

Goal to be achieved by combined logistics centres/junctions

Contrary to what many in the media would have you believe, consolidated logistics centers/hubs are NOT a waste of taxpayer money. In fact, the opposite is true. Basically, it’s a financial bailout for a viable business. This not only saves labour, but also money.

  1. As more people work with limited resources, efficiency of use will also increase. This means an economical use of resources and therefore less waste of time, money and effort.
  2. This will enhance mutual understanding between the three departments and the integration of logistics.
  3. Everything from minor needs to maintenance and communication is now coordinated by these hubs/centers.

They will also be used for other purposes: –

  • Fuel
  • Ration
  • Small arms and ammunition
  • Aircraft clothing
  • Leasing company transport
  • General stores
  • Parts
  • Technical Support

It is therefore clear that we need common logistics hubs/centres to ensure full integration and synergy of the three services in India.

Current events

Since last year, the Indian government has been planning a series of joint national prevention forces across the country. They are generally provided in areas where two or more services operate.

  • The contracts for the first joint logistics centres/ hubs were signed in early 2020. They are expected to be located in Mumbai, Port Blair and Guwahati.
  • Two of them were put into service in January of this year. These are the JLN in Guwahati and the Three Services Command in Andaman and Nicobar, Port Blair.
  • As mentioned earlier, Mumbai’s JLN was also recently inaugurated by C.D.S. Bipin Rawat.
  • JLN’s operate on the concept of maintenance in mind. This means that all procurement and supply activities related to the node(s) are the responsibility of the lead service. However, this applies only to actions normally shared between the three services.
  • The three current OSLs have 3 different scheduled services, one for each. In Mumbai the main service is the navy and in Guwahati it is the army. On the other hand, the Andaman and Nicobar Command (ANC) is the main service in Port Blair.

Concluding remarks

Currently, we have 3 consolidated logistics centers/ nodes in India. They are based in Mumbai, Guwahati and Port Blair. This is a very good way to promote cooperation in a tripartite service.

This will create synergies among our three services and ultimately enhance India’s defence capabilities. If the Army, Navy and Air Force are in constant touch with each other, India’s defence consciousness will also improve. The Indian armed forces will have their eyes and ears in all areas at all times. In this way we are also made aware of seafaring.

Over time, these JLNs will strengthen India’s defence capabilities in all areas.
