However, if you are not satisfied with this quick help, read on. I explain in detail how to get the diploma icon or any other icon anywhere on your Mac or Windows PC, for example in MS Word/Excel/PowerPoint.
As you may already know, there are several dual function keys on a Windows or Mac keyboard. That is, there are characters on the keyboard that are easily accessible as secondary keys. By simply pressing two or more keys at once, you can easily insert such characters into your work. If you z. B. Press Shift + $, and you get a dollar sign ($).
However, other characters are not printed as a second key on the keyboard. This makes it harder to hit. One of these symbols is the degree sign (°).
Typing becomes very difficult for you if you regularly have to insert some of these characters in your work.
But it doesn’t have to be difficult. Especially now that you’ve read this step-by-step guide.
To enter a grade character in word/speed on the keypad
In the following sections, I will show you all the easy ways to type or paste this symbol (°) anywhere on your Windows or Mac PC (for example, in Word or Excel or PowerPoint).
In a few minutes I will explain some methods you can use to get this (°) and possibly other characters.
For quick reference, press Ctrl + @ , space on your keyboard to enter the degree or degree symbol in Microsoft Word. This shortcut only works in MS Word. For Windows users who do not have MS Word: press the Alt key and type 0176 alt code on the numeric keypad. On a Mac, you can also press Option + Shift + 8.
However, the methods are explained in detail below without further ado.
Method 1: Keyboard shortcutsSymbol keys (Windows and Mac)
The keyboard shortcut for Mac is Option + Shift + 8.
There are several keyboard shortcuts in Windows, some of which only work in Microsoft Word.
However, there is a Windows shortcut for the degree sign that works in all applications. This is a key combination called Alt+0176 (discussed in the next chapter).
alt=Package labels for Windows and Mac width=640 height=360 data-recalc-dims=1 data-ez= data-ezsrc=http://server.digimetriq.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/How-to-Type-Degree-Symbol-on-Keyboard.png />
The degree sign for Microsoft Word is Ctrl + @, Space or 00B0, Alt X.
These shortcuts only work in Microsoft Word.
To use the grade label in Windows (for Word), follow these instructions:
- Place the cursor at the desired location.
- Press the key combination Ctrl + @ and then the space bar. This label inserts a degree symbol for you. To press Ctrl + @, you must press the Shift key and also have access to the keyboard shortcut section @. The last key combination is Ctrl + Shift + @, then the spacebar.
- Alternatively, you can type 00B0 on the keyboard and then press Alt + X. This converts the numbers into a degree sign at the point where you placed the insertion point.
The following describes how to use the grade icon label for Mac:
- First, place the cursor where you want to insert the character.
- Now press Option + Shift + 8 on the Mac keyboard.

Method 3: Copy and paste diploma symbol
Use the button below to copy and paste the degree icon for your work.
My favorite method for pasting characters I can’t just type is copy and paste.
With this method, all you have to do is search Google for the character you want to type, and then copy it from one of the search results. Once you have pasted a symbol into a document, you can copy and paste it again whenever you need it.
Use the button above to get this character on your clipboard.
There is another way to copy this character and any other character in Windows. This was due to the use of the Windows sign statement.
Follow these steps to copy and paste any character using a character card.
- Find the Character Map application by pressing the Start key.
- The Character Map application appears in the search results. Click on it to start it.

- After selecting the character you want to copy, click the Copy button.
- Go to the place where you need the symbol, whether in MS Word, Excel or PowerPoint, and press Ctrl + V to paste it.

Method 4: Using the dialog box for inserting characters
This approach is not as simple as the quick methods. But it’s pretty simple.
And once you’ve inserted a symbol into a document, you can copy and paste it whenever you need it in your work.
The following sections describe the steps for inserting a degree sign into a word using the Insert dialog box.
alt=insert rider width tab=385 height=129 data-recalc-dims=1 data-ez= data-ezsrc=http://server.digimetriq.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/1618793793_546_4-Ways-to-Insert-the-Upside-Down-Question-Point.png />
- On the Insert tab, click on the Symbol button and select Other symbols…..

With these few clicks, the Symbol dialog box appears.
- Find the character you want to insert.
To easily find the degree icon in the symbol window, look in the upper right corner of the dialog box and select Subgroup from the pop-up list: Appendix Latin-1. The grade symbol you want to insert is in this category and should appear.
- Select an icon and then click the Insert button.

You can also double-click a symbol to insert it into the document.

Method 5: Auto-correct word for degree sign
The degree sign can also be entered using Word’s AutoCorrect feature.
This is a feature of MS Word that can be used to correct spelling errors such as these.
This AutoCorrection function allows you to assign an abbreviation to a degree sign (e.g., DGR).
This way, when you type DGR text, Word thinks you actually meant to type ° and automatically converts it to Degree for you.
See the illustration below:

This method is interesting because you can assign a label or a custom key combination to a symbol and Word automatically inserts the symbol as you type code.
Here are the steps to follow to enter a degree sign in Word using the auto-correction.
alt=insert rider width tab=385 height=129 data-recalc-dims=1 data-ez= data-ezsrc=http://server.digimetriq.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/1618793793_546_4-Ways-to-Insert-the-Upside-Down-Question-Point.png />
- In the Insert tab, go to the Symbols section and click on the Other symbols button…… The Symbols window appears.
alt=Other symbols width=331 height=295 data-recalc-dims=1 data-ez= data-ezsrc=http://server.digimetriq.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/1618793794_983_4-Ways-to-Insert-the-Upside-Down-Question-Point.png />
- Find the degree icon and press to select it.
- Press the AutoCorrect…. button (AutoCorrect) to open the AutoCorrect window.
alt=customize ° symbol abbreviation width=561 height=407 data-recalc-dims=1 data-ez= data-ezsrc=http://server.digimetriq.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/1618803394_557_How-to-Type-Degree-Symbol-on-Keyboard.png />
- In the AutoCorrect dialog box, enter the following:
Replaced: DGR
С : °
alt=Replace the ° sign with your own legend width=468 height=494 data-recalc-dims=1 data-ez= data-ezsrc=http://server.digimetriq.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/1618803395_990_How-to-Type-Degree-Symbol-on-Keyboard.png />
- Click on Add and then on OK.
Word now automatically inserts the diploma symbol into your document when you type DGR.
alt=own character link in Word width=449 height=140 data-recalc-dims=1 data-ezsrc=http://server.digimetriq.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/04/1618803394_276_How-to-Type-Degree-Symbol-on-Keyboard.gif />
However, below are a few things to keep in mind when using the automatic correction method to insert a degree sign.
- The AutoCorrect function distinguishes between upper and lower case letters. In other words, if you type dgr (lowercase), Word will not convert it to Degree unless you type DGR (uppercase).
- If there is text before or after the autocorrect, Word considers it part of the text and therefore does not convert it to a degree sign. For example, XDGR is not converted and X DGR is converted to X°.
Supplement
As you can see, these are different ways to insert or enter a degree sign in Word/Excel with or without a keyboard.
My preferred method is copy and paste followed by a keyboard shortcut with a degree sign in Word for Windows and Mac. The alt-code method is also simple.
