How to duplicate a screen in Windows 10

Mirroring in Windows 10 can be done without the use of third-party software. This is a built-in Windows feature that allows you to not only duplicate, but also expand or display a specific screen only. There are two ways to use this feature: using the hotkeys to quickly switch between modes, or by changing the multiple view option in the settings.

Screen duplication with hotkeys

To quickly switch to screen mirroring mode in Windows 10, hold down the Windows key and then press the P key.

To switch to one of the available modes, press the P key again while holding down the Windows key to switch modes:

• PC screen only – If you select this option, Windows displays only the Startup / PC screen.
• Duplicate – Windows duplicates the main screen on all other available screens.
• Expand – The available screen is expanded to another screen.
• Second screen only – If you select this option, Windows will only display the second screen/TV.

To duplicate or clone the main screen on all other screens, select Duplicate from the list of available options. When windows are selected, the screen is immediately duplicated on all connected screens.

Switch to duplicate screen using display parameters

If the hotkey method does not work, you can change the view mode to duplicate screen in the view settings. Follow the steps below to do this.

Options not available or monitor not recognized

When connecting a new monitor or projector, make sure they are connected with the correct cable and plugged into the correct port.

If the hardware came with a driver disk, make sure to install it as well so that the hardware will be recognized and work properly with Windows.

To manually detect a newly connected monitor, projector, or other type of display, you can do the following

Right-click anywhere on the desktop and select Display Settings. Under Reposition Screens, click the Detect button to tell Windows to detect any newly connected screens.

In the same window, you can drag the screen in any direction to change its position if you want to enlarge it. To identify the display, to know which number represents which display, press the Identify key.

Main screen accidentally switched to another screen

If the main display is replaced by a monitor, TV or projector that you do not want to use as your main display, especially after returning from the duplicate mode, which often causes problems, you can change the main display back to your preferred monitor in the display settings.

Open the Display Settings (right-click on the desktop > Display Settings). First, select the monitor by clicking on the number of the monitor you want to change in the main screen. Then, in the Multiple screens section, check the Make this my primary screen box. This immediately makes the selected display the main display.
